What is The Earnest Wesleyan?
In January 1860, B.T. Roberts and other concerned Christians launched the magazine The Earnest Christian with the aim being to “set up the Bible standard of religion” in the “catholic spirit” with an “uncompromising advocacy of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit”. The Earnest Wesleyan exists to be an outlet for a similar message to reach audiences today and elevate the voices of orthodoxy in the present generation through thoughtful commentary on culture, religion, theology, politics, economics, and everything under the sun.
In the world of online theological and cultural commentary, few outlets exist where various spheres are explored with faithfulness to Christian orthodoxy. Even fewer places exist where the material is accessible to the laity. While we encourage academic pursuits, we are firm believers in every lay person’s ability to be a lay theologian. To that end, all of our articles are meant to be accessible in a way that encourages and does not hinder lay engagement with theological content. We seek to saturate the Church with laity who know their God deeper through intellectual pursuits and do not depend solely on clergy to be knowledgeable on their behalf. Read more about that mission in the article below:
While the name is Wesleyan and many articles will show a bias to that theological tradition, this publication is not just for Wesleyans. It is hoped, however, to have an impact in the vein of the renewal seen at various times through the Wesleyan movement. The Wesleyan tradition has, at its core, been one of equipping the laity for the theological and practical tasks of ministry. That inheritance has suffered in past years, and the fire needs to be rekindled.

Have an article you want to submit?
Guest authors are welcome and encouraged to make submissions. Feel free to contact the editor and submit an article for review. Email the editor and submit articles to theearnestwesleyan@gmail.com. Here are some general guidelines:
Articles are expected to be digestible. For this reason, there is a preference for articles 2,500 words or fewer. However, longer articles will be considered.
Our writing goal is for content to be able to be engaged and digested by both academia and laity, the standard being that commentary is always accessible to laity.
Submissions are subject to basic grammatical edits by our editorial team. Authors will have a chance to review the edited article for approval before publication.
Please include a short blurb about yourself along with your submission. Ex: “Rev. Dr. Abraham Lincoln serves as pastor of White House Church in Washington, DC. He has a Ph.D. in Proclamation from Gettysburg University, and a Master of Divinity from Hodgenville Theology Seminary. He has a lovely wife, Mary Todd, and has a passion for attending the theater. You can read more from Abe at abelincoln.com, and find him on Twitter at @HonestAbeTheology.”
Submissions must promote an orthodox Christian worldview. Guest authors are not required to sign a statement of faith, but their published content must not do violence to historic, creedal Christianity as expressed in the Apostles’, Niceno-Constantinopolitan, and Athanasian Creeds, and the Chalcedonian Definition. Heretical or heterodox content will be rejected outright.
Submissions are expected to use standard English grammar and not require rewriting prior to review.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Citations are encouraged for all quotes, attribution is required.
The Earnest Wesleyan is under no obligation to publish any submitted content and can reject submissions, withdraw publication, and redact for any reason at the editor’s discretion. Submission is consent to these guidelines and other editorial norms not specifically listed here.
